Susan knew from an early age that she would become an interior designer. Moving frequently as a child shaped her belief that the spaces we live in have a huge impact on the way we live and feel.

She worked her way in the design industry, collaborating on many notable five star, new construction hotels such as Shangri-la Taipei, Kobe Bay Sheraton and the iconic Four Seasons New York. Her extensive knowledge of upscale properties has always been an anchor for her designs and fostered the confidence to pursue a partnership with Debra.

“After years in the design industry, I wanted to create an environment that fostered creativity and fun with no egos. We never use the same materials on any of our projects twice, so this always keeps it interesting.

Debra found her way to the design industry "while studying for business law exams in the famous Geisel Library on the UCSD campus. I found I liked being in the building more than studying. It was a reminder that I had strong feelings about space and design."

She made the decision to reroute her career path. Working first as a designer, she eventually would grow to take on project management and Design Director roles prior to creating SANDdesign.

“While traveling abroad I like to wander in every city and experience the architecture and ambiance, the way it makes you feel while there.

How can we create a space and influence the perceived vibe?

These feelings inspire me everyday to experiment with different materials and construction.”
